By the time Kellan headed back to the hotel and I made my way up to my office, I had a blinding headache. I rooted around in my desk until I found a bottle of Advil and popped three tablets, figuring my stomach would hate me but at least the throbbing in my head would let up.

Maybe.

“We’re so close I can taste it!” Tod came into my office and closed the door, rubbing his hands together. “You need to go home tonight and close this deal, Jesse.”

I gazed up at him, trying to mask my annoyance. “If you and Mr. Pritchard couldn’t close the deal, what makes you think I can?”

He chuckled. “If I thought sexual favors would work with him, I’d give it a shot, but since he appears to be heterosexual, that falls to you.”

My mouth fell open. “Are you…serious?” I demanded. “That’s the most inappropriate⁠—”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, Jesse, calm your tits.” He perched on the edge of my desk, looking down at me. “This isn’t preschool. We have grown-up conversations and occasionally make jokes with sexual undertones. Please don’t tell me you’re offended. Because you’re way too old to play the demure little virgin.”

“I’m not offended because the joke was sexual in nature,” I snapped, trying not to grit my teeth. “But because you basically just told me to sleep with a potential client! That’s a whole different thing.”

“Why is it different? You’re going to sleep with him anyway, aren’t you?”

“That’s none of your business!” I hissed.

He laughed. “Jesus. Are you really as innocent as you seem or is this an act you put on at work because you think you have to? Don’t get me wrong, it’s working, but enough already. I mean, let’s face it—we both know your time as Kellan Cross’s flavor-of-the-month is limited.”

“Excuse me?” I gaped at him, heat rising to my cheeks.

“You’re an attractive woman, but he’s going to get bored with your sweet little innocence sooner rather than later, and we need to get him on board before that happens.”

“You don’t know anything about us,” I said quietly. “And you’re being incredibly unprofessional right now.”

“What are you going to do? Report me to HR? Good luck with that. I just brought in five million dollars’ worth of new clients. I’m not going anywhere. And frankly, I don’t know what you’re upset about. As soon as we get Kellan to sign on the dotted line, your status here immediately levels up. It doesn’t matter what happens between you personally—Mr. Pritchard and the others will see your potential and I guarantee you make partner in two years. I’ll personally see to it.”

“This isn’t about my career,” I snapped, smacking my hand down on the desk. “How can you not see how inappropriate this conversation is?”

His eyes met mine and a slow, creepy smile slid into place. “Oh, honey, you haven’t seen anything yet. It might be time to pull up your big-girl panties if you want to be on the fast track.”

“What does that even mean?”

“It means get what you can from Kellan.
